Back control has three components that fail independently: the upper body connection, usually a seatbelt with one arm over the shoulder and the other under the far armpit; the lower body connection, either two hooks or a body triangle; and your head position. Most escapes start with your partner turning toward the arm that sits underneath, or with them working their shoulders down to the mat. Keeping the seatbelt tight and your weight on the opposite shoulder answers both.
Key points
- Set the seatbelt with one arm over the shoulder and the other under the far armpit, hands joined and elbows squeezed to their ribs.
- Your partner will try to put their shoulders on the mat toward the side where your arm sits underneath, so keep weight on the opposite shoulder.
- Place hooks inside the thighs rather than crossing at the ankles, since crossed feet can be trapped and used to turn you out.
- A body triangle trades some mobility for a stronger hold; lock it above the hip bones rather than around the waist where it slides.
- Attack the neck only once the connection is stable, because reaching for a strangle with a loose seatbelt donates exactly the space they need.
Common mistakes
- Crossing your ankles in front of their hips, which invites a crushing counter and gives them a single lever to strip both legs.
- Letting your chest separate from their back while changing grips, which is the moment at which nearly every back escape begins.
- Squeezing a body triangle so hard you cannot follow their rotation, turning a dominant hold into a static one they can spin inside.
Put it into practice
Connection before attack
- Start with the seatbelt set and both hooks in while your partner attempts escapes at moderate resistance for two minutes.
- You may only maintain the position during that time, with no strangles and no grip changes above the collar line.
- Each time the position is lost, identify whether the chest connection, the hooks or your head position failed first.
- Close with a round in which you may attack the neck only after holding the connection for a full thirty seconds.
